In the gallery formerly exploring the life of the Portuguese monarch, a new discourse, inaugurated in July 2009 is solely dedicated to the subject of King D. Carlos and Oceanographic Science. The exhibit dwells on early explorations, and the resulting contributions towards the knowledge of the

deep-sea by national and foreign naturalists; on the role of the Portuguese monarch in the development of oceanographic studies throughout his 12 expeditions;and on the impact of the latter in national and international contexts. Several institutions, including the Aquário Vasco da Gama, Museu de Marinha, The Natural History Museum of London, Musée Océanographique de Monaco, Musée de la Marine de Paris, among others, collaborated with this museum with long-term loans of specimens belonging to the former royal oceanographic collection; or by gifting archival images that allow us to chart the main episodes of the monarch’s achievements and those of his team aboard the yachts “Amélia”. In an invitation to a journey to the past, visitors will “dive” in the “underwater depths” of recent history.
