Forte S. Jorge de Oitavos - Centro de Interpretação
Português | Français | Castellano
It rests on the cliff and overlooks the ocean with the typical stance of a military building that was built with the purpose of protecting from enemies approaching by sea, pirates or invading troops, that considered this stretch of Cascais coastline a reasonable spot for disembarking. This purpose can be seen in every angle or wall of the building, in its trench, the watchtowers and in the tank, or in the battery (viewpoint), with its support for cannons and merlons where some cannons and pieces of artillery are still set today, reminding us of its old function.
Visitors will have a broader perception of aspects related to the construction of fortifications and their role as a military device. Small texts, images and pieces exhibited (some previously unreleased) puts them in context with the many military fortifications for the advanced defense of the Tagus.
